Heating using microwaves

Microwaves are radio waves used to generate heat, or for drying purposes. Microwave ovens are the most common source of microwaves in Swedish homes. The same technology used in microwave ovens is also applied when repairing moisture damage in concrete walls and floors. This is called 'microwave drying'.

Microwaves have a short range and disappear at the moment the device emitting them is switched off.

Health risks

Microwaves can be detrimental to health if the device emitting them is being used incorrectly or is faulty. If people or animals are exposed to high levels of microwaves, this can quickly cause deep burn injuries and eye damage.

The role and responsibilities of the Authority

The Authority imposes requirements to ensure safe microwave drying while also exercising regulatory supervision over this kind of work activity.
