IAEA IRRS-mission report to Sweden published
The International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, has reviewed Sweden’s framework for nuclear safety and radiation protection, the so-called IRRS review (Integrated Regulatory Review Service). The review is carried out every ten years by a group of international experts led by a team from the IAEA. Sweden’s second full-scope IRRS-review was carried out 14 – 25 November 2022. The report has now been published.
The mission report states that Sweden has a comprehensive regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation safety covering all facilities, activities and exposure situations. The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) was perceived as a competent and independent authority whose staff is committed to effectively fulfilling the SSM's statutory obligations.
The report also highlights one “good practice” and four “good performances”. The good practice concerns the monitoring and optimization of patient dosimetry through the development and use of the web-based portal DosReg.
Areas of good performance include:
- The proactive approach to inform and influence public awareness of safety measures;
- Transparency in decision-making for licensing through open court hearings
- The digitisation of processes to facilitate source registration by applicants and authorised users
- The oversight of the licensees though annual integrated safety assessments and identifying crosscutting issues
